We’ve found on the internet two materials about the Lutheran bishop of Stockholm, Rt Rev. Eva Brunne, the first woman-bishop in the world, who lives in a commited relationship with another woman (and a priest): the first one is an interview in Polish, the second one an article about her in German. We hope to translate the German text in the future.

Pomimo niekłamanej sympatii do szwedzkich luteranów (znajdujących się zresztą w ‘pełnej komunii’ z Kościołami anglikańskimi i prowadzących obecnie dialog w celu zawarcia analogicznego porozumienia z Unia Utrechcka Kościołów starokatolickich) oraz radości z jej wyboru na biskupa, nieomalże przeoczyliśmy fakt, ze ‘Gazeta Wyborcza’ zamieściła miesiąc temu obszerny wywiad z Biskup Evą. Takie są skutki nieczytania opiniotwórczej prasy! Na szczęście są w sieci ludzie, którzy śledzą takie wydarzenia uważniej niż my (w tym wypadku było to środowisko ‘Frondy’ – tak, tak, zaglądamy tam niekiedy, chociaż ani religijnie ani politycznie nie jest nam z nim specjalnie po drodze!). Dzięki ich – iście rewolucyjnej – czujności zostaliśmy w końcu naprowadzeni na właściwy trop i dlatego, choć z pewnym ‘poślizgiem’, zamieszczamy odnośnik do tego wywiadu .
Jak wiadomo, każdy wywiad jest dokładnie tak dobry (lub zły) jak dobre (lub złe) są zadawane w nim pytania. Pytania, które zadała dziennikarka ‘Wyborczej’, naszym skromnym zdaniem do najlepszych się nie zaliczają, wiec i wywiad uważamy w gruncie rzeczy za przeciętny. Tym bardziej zachęcamy również do zapoznania sie z niemieckojęzycznym portretem Biskup, który zamieścił ‘ Frankfurter Rundschau ‘.
Być może kiedyś przetłumaczymy ten krotki, aczkolwiek treściwy, tekst na język polski i angielski. Póki co zachęcamy do lektury jednego i drugiego materiału.

Ik bedoel de consequentheid van hun denken: vrouw als bisschop, gay als bisschop. Het is als Ikea, als je eraan begint, ga je er ook helemaal doorheen.
Zo heb ik het nog niet gezien, moet ik toegeven. Maar ik heb ook een beetje hekel aan IKEA ;-), vooral sinds ik mijn ex-echtgenote ging helpen met het in elkaar zetten van IKEA-spullen. Maar het is inderdaad zo: ze zijn ergens aan begonnen en nu gaan ze gewoon door, consequent en ‘gründlich’. Leefde ik in Zweden zou dit vast en zeker mijn kerk zijn (ben net begonnen met Zweeds).
Of de IKEA-spullen zelf zo gründlich zijn, is maar de vraag. Maar mijn onlangs daar gekochte lectuurmand bevalt wel goed. Ik hoop dat die kerk wel gründlich is. Waarom ben je net begonnen met Zweeds?
Juist vanwege de belangstelling voor die kerk. Ik zou er eindelijk een keer heen willen en het land en de kerk van dichtbij leren kennen.
Pozwoliłem sobie na przeczytanie tego artykułu w Wyborczej. Tylko polski dziennikarz mógł tak głupie pytania zadawać… Chamstwo, brak taktu, żeby nie powiedzieć elementarnej kultury. She is a bishop – and lesbian
In Sweden the 55 year old Eva Brunne was consecrated bishop of Stockholm. Small notice: Brunne is openly lesbian. By Hannes Gamillscheg

There are churches in which women are not allowed to be consecrated, let alone to be in the office of a bishop. There are churches that consider homosexuality sin and exclude gays and lesbians from the sacraments. And there are churches that have left behind discrimination on the ground of gender or sexual preference.
The Lutheran Church in Sweden belongs to the latter category. In this church the 55 year old Eva Brunne has now been chosen bishop of Stockholm. She is, as far as known, the first woman worldwide in such a high church office to come out into the open as lesbian.
Characteristic of the atmosphere in Sweden is, that Brunne’s homosexuality did not play any role in the election. The fact that the candidate, consecrated in 1978 as a pastor, is living in a registrated partnership with Gunilla Lindén – also a pastor in the “Svenska Kyrkan”- is well known and only for a small fundamentalistic minority a reason for agitation. Brunne was the favorite of the church basis in the election by the pastors of the diocese of Stockholm.
Her adherents speak highly of her “natural authority”, her ability to rouse to enthusiasm and her proficiency in “seeing the whole” and not loosing oneself in details. In the first voting she already led the way among eight candidates, in the second ballot she won with 413 against 365 votes against the last competitors.
She stands up for an open church and mentions the change-over to adjustment to a multiethnic multireligious society as the biggest challenge. “Diversity is a great treasure” she says. “Glad and proud” she says she is, to be part of a Lutheran church, in which “independent people take position themselves and take up responsibility.”
After 16 years as a pastor in Stockholm se worked in the office of a bishop eventually. In her spare time she reads crime novels along with theology and she carves in a furniture making. “What one does to become like Jesus…”, she comments on her hobby with her own self irony.
While there are more gay bishops worldwide – in the USA Gene Robinson was given the opportunity to lead prayer at the inauguration of president Obama -, Brunne is the first lesbian bishop. To her execution of the office this will not change much. In the case of solemnization of a marriage between homosexuals she doesn’t have to reform the attitude of the church.
The attitude is already there. Her predecessor Caroline Krook was the first woman on the bishop seat of Stockholm. In Swedish church circles too there was controversy about the question if gay marriage should be blessed in church. She clearly pronounced a positive judgment on this. The fact that Brunne has a three year old son born from her female partner, is “no big issue”, according to her, “in the bishop yard there is much room. Why shouldn’t a female bishop have little children?”
