Gewiß, als wirtschaftliches System ist der Sozialismus im Wettstreit mit der Marktwirtschaft gescheitert. Aber als Utopie, als Summe uralter Menschheitsideale: soziale Gerechtigkeit, Solidarität, Freiheit für die Unterdrückten, Hilfe für die Schwachen, ist er unvergänglich.

. Nieźle pasuje, nieprawdaż?
(…) człowiek się zastanawia, czy aby w ramach następnego absurdalnego pomysłu historii z kolei nie zginie z kapitalizm i czy ratunek nie przyjdzie ze strony oczyszczonego socjalizmu. To wcale nie takie niewyobrażalne, jak się wydaje.
Oczywiście, jako system gospodarczy socjalizm poniósł porażkę w rywalizacji z gospodarka rynkową. Jednakże jako utopia, jako suma prastarych ideałów ludzkości: sprawiedliwości społecznej, solidarności, wolności dla uciśnionych, pomocy słabym, ma walor nieprzemijalności.

one wanders whether, as a result of another absurd idea of history, capitalism won’t perish and whether succour won’t come from purified Socialism. This is not as unimaginable as it may seem. Of course, as an economic system Socialism suffered a defeat in competition with market economy. Yet as a utopia, the sum of ancient human ideals: social justice, solidarity, freedom for the oppressed, help for the weak, it is imperishable.
